Recycling Plastic
Did you know?
- 6.9 billion plastic bags are used in Australia every year
- and that only 3% of plastic bags used in Australia are
recycled!!!
(information obtained from the Clean up Australia website)
- plastic bags are easily recycled and most major plastic bag
manufacturers have in-house plastic recycling facilities.
There are 2 types of plastic bags that are recyclable:
- High Density Polyethelene (HDPE) bags. Examples of these are the thin
“supermarket” style bags that most retailers use. A HDPE bag is identifiable
due to its “crackly” properties. There are collection bays for recycling at
most supermarkets.
- Low Density Polyethelene (LDPE) bags. Examples of these are the
“boutique” style bags that are generally used for luxury items by retailers.
They are also used to package items such as mop heads, magazines and
furniture. A LDPE bag is identifiable due to its “soft-feel” properties.
Local councils need to be petitioned to provide more collection bays for
this type of plastic.

Do’s and Don’ts for recycling:
- Do remove items such as sales receipts, coupons, staples, coins and
other objects that interfere with recycling.
- Don’t include plastic snack packages, food wrap, or bags with
drawstrings or plastic handles.
- Do petition your local council to recycle plastic bags if they don’t
already!!! The onus is on all of us to re-use this valuable resource.

The Recycling Process:
See how easy it is:
Step 1: Consumers collect and build up a store of plastic bags first removing
all items which interfere with the recycling process such as paper and register
receipts.
Step 2: The plastic bags are collected by the recycler, sorted into
the appropriate colour groups and stored in bales.
Step 3: The plastic is loaded onto the ramp, chopped, melted down and
extruded back into pellets ready to be reused as recycled bags.
